Sixth Form students experienced a virtual reality car crash during a visit by Humberside Fire & Rescue Service’s Road Safety Team.
Students wore VR headsets which placed them in the front passenger seat of a car driven by a young person, which was involved in a collision. They experienced the run-up and impact of the crash and its aftermath, when they were rescued by the emergency services.
The Road Safety Team also spoke to students about the major factors in fatal and serious road traffic collisions - drink driving, drug impairment, failing to wear seatbelts, speeding and using mobile phones whilst driving – when only a split-second lapse in concentration can be catastrophic.
The ‘drive4life’ presentation is aimed at young drivers and passengers because although 16-24 year-olds represent 11% of the Humberside population and 7% of full driving licence holders nationally, they account for 27% of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.
Head of Sixth Form Laura Powell said: “This pro-active approach to road safety gave our students plenty to think about and, I hope, will make them far safer drivers. Many thanks to Humberside Fire and Rescue Service for visiting and passing on their vital safety messages so effectively.”
