The Modern Foreign Languages Department held a Great European Bake Off in celebration of the European Day of Languages on Wednesday 26 September, for pupils at Pocklington School.
Pupils were encouraged to bake a “European-themed” treat and their creations were judged by the Headmaster, Mr Ronan and Cookery Teacher, Mrs Salmon.
There were all sorts of wonderful creations, including a (nearly life-size!) Eiffel Tower made entirely out of crispy cake! The judges tasted the Colosseum, a two-tiered Union Jack, EU cupcakes, Spanish maracas, a flamenco cake, a Swedish Princess cake, a fruit mille feuille, a Dutch bundt cake, an Oktoberfest extravaganza complete with stein and a traditional Polish cake and these were only a few of them!
The winners were:
Lower School Star Baker: Will Briggs
Lower School Runner-up: Logan Carter
Lower School 3rd place: Poppy Ducker
Special Recognition: Adam Wilcock
Middle School Star Baker: Josh Gill
Middle School Runner-up: Phoebe Anderson
Special Recognition: Max Haustedt
6th Form Star Baker: Pete Massey
6th Form Runner-up: Antonia Westphal
All of the cakes were sold to raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support as part of MacMillan Coffee Morning which raised the fantastic total of £230.67.
Mrs Scott-Somers, Teacher of Spanish and French said: “Our thanks go to all of the pupils who spent a huge amount of time and effort creating their masterpieces; we were totally overwhelmed by the quality and variety of bakes!
She continued: “It really did feel like a proper ‘bake off’ with comments such as “there’s no soggy bottom there” and “nice texture” from the judges! Well done to everyone whether you baked, bought or donated.”
