The OP Tennis Team 2017

 OP Tennis 2017

The OP tennis team of Max Los (98-09), James Bisson (04-12) (JB) and James Sweeting (80-88) (JS) enjoyed a narrow 4-2 victory in a mixture of singles and doubles against the school team of Trevor Loten (70-80), Ed Dare and Charlie Medforth.

In the first round, JS played the windy conditions slightly better than Charlie, winning 6-3, whilst there was plenty of good-natured ‘banter’ during Max and JB’s 7-5 win against Trevor and Ed, which proved crucial in the end!

The school team were up against it, particularly when JB continued his excellent sporting weekend (OP golf day winner a few days before!) with a 6-0 win against Ed, but Trevor and Charlie registered a 6-3 victory over Max and JS to give the school team the chance to salvage a draw in the last round.

Trevor and Max had a keenly-contested singles match, with the former finally edging it 6-3, but the OPs wrapped up the overall victory as JB and JS defeated Ed and Charlie 6-2.

The competitors in the Edmund-Loten Inspire Trophy TournamentThe 3rd Edmund-Loten Inspire Tennis Trophy Competition

In the annual Edmund-Loten Inspire Trophy tournament, 16 players comprising of current pupils, parents, staff and OPs were divided into two groups of four pairs for the initial round robin stage.

Group A consisted of Christel Wake and son Charlie, Jack and Taggy Medforth, Claire Kettle and Henry Kay and Ian and Cameron Campbell (father and young son). This group was incredibly well contested, with only four games separating 1st and 4th places, but Claire and Henry eventually claimed first place just ahead of the Campbells.

Group B consisted of all-adult pairings: Claire Douthwaite and Neil McCollum, John and Sally Medforth, Patrick Dare and Anna Hallam and OPs Neil McGregor (76-81) and Rachel Clark (née Sweeting, 91-96). Patrick and Anna managed to win all their matches to top the group, with John and Sally claiming second place.

In the semi-finals, however, Patrick and Anna narrowly lost out to the Campbells, whilst the Medforths frustrated Claire and Henry with their ‘Sledmere slice’! A tight final was anticipated, and that proved to be the case, with John and Sally eventually winning 5-3 to take home the trophy.
