Sixth form students tested their culinary skills in another masterchef-style challenge using donated out-of-sell-by-date food courtesy of Tesco’s.

Two teams and two individuals took part in the after-school challenge which was to create a main course dish in one hour using an array of ingredients kindly donated and delivered by Tesco’s Market Weighton Store Manager Rob Carley, who also stayed to judge the finished dishes and offer feedback on the student’s creations.

Robert Boddy and Guy Prew made a garlic and guacamole slider with seared lamb steak, creamy pan fried winter veg and sautéed new potatoes; Henry Brock made a vegetable stir fry serpent; Henry Foster made steak with a dressed salad and Peter Massey and Tiger Brash made beef pie with a rustic herby mash and sprouting broccoli.

The judges Anne-Marie Salmon, Cookery Teacher and Tesco representative, Rob had a tough job to decide between the delicious dishes but announced Guy Prew and Robert Boddy the winners with their seared lamb steak slider.

Mrs Salmon said: “It was a closely fought contest, with plenty of good humour and camaraderie throughout the hour. It is really pleasing to see the students enjoying the process of choosing ingredients, inventing a dish and then cooking it and we are very grateful to Tesco for letting us get involved with this initiative”

Tesco's Community Food Connection donates surplus fresh food daily from all Tesco's stores to local charities and not-for-profit organisations. Already, 600,000 meals' worth of food is redistributed every week.
