Pocklington Prep School Year Four pupils were recruited into the Roman Army when they travelled back in time to Roman Britain during a visit to Murton Park.

They first visited a Celtic settlement where they got to sit in a traditional roundhouse and see how tribes of Celts lived in the area in the First Century.

Then they signed up as auxiliary soldiers with the recent Roman invaders and went to experience life as a Roman soldier in their turf and timber fort nearby. This involved learning how to write in Latin and making a traditional roman oil lamp in the pottery.

The children were also able to dress up in traditional Roman uniforms and armour and learn the different skills needed to be an effective Roman soldier. This included learning how to march, throw spears, and fight with swords and shields! They even got to fight off a rebellious Celtic warrior.

Mr Bull, Pocklington Prep School Year Four Teacher said: ‘It was so enjoyable to see the children throwing themselves enthusiastically into role-play and immersing themselves in Celtic and then Roman life. They really engaged with the “Roman Centurions” at Murton Park, listening and learning well as they brought to life what they have learned in the classroom.”
