Pocklington School's Physics Olympics teamOn Wednesday 13 June, four Second Year students entered the Physics Olympics at St Peter's School, York. Thirty schools from across the north of England competed at the event which comprised seven rounds, involving physics practical tasks, maths skills, precision of measurement and overall teamwork.

The students won two events outright and came second in two others including the prestigious Fermi quiz (everyday estimations to the nearest power of 10).  Below is an example of one of the Fermi quiz questions:

Estimate how many gold atoms are in Megan Markle's wedding ring

Our team successfully calculated / estimated 10 to the power 23 atoms.

Overall the students came in 4th place and gave an outstanding team performance, only falling short of the overall winners by a few points.

Mr Anstee, Teacher of Physics said: “This was a very enjoyable day and I am so proud of the team and their achievement.”
