At Pocklington Prep School, we understand and appreciate the value of swimming, not only within the confines of the pool but also beyond it. Swimming is beneficial for boosting physical fitness and enhancing co-ordination, balance, and posture. It can build confidence and self-esteem, and most importantly, it is a critical life-saving skill that everyone should have.

At Pocklington School, we are fortunate to have an on-site pool, meaning every child from Pre School to Year 6 gets the chance to practice weekly in their swimming lessons and the opportunity to compete for their house team each year.

For those who desire to progress further, we offer trials to enter the competitive Swim Squad. Twice a week, our young squad gather for practices that nurture their athletic skill, commitment, and teamwork. The training sessions are a testament to pupils’ commitment with one taking place after school and the other commencing at 7am! This early morning session is followed by a treat – a hearty school breakfast, complete with a hot chocolate. It’s the perfect fuel for our swimmers and offers not only physical nourishment but is also a great way to kick-start the day!

Swimmers are guided by our passionate and committed coaches who instil them with a drive for personal improvement and a love for being part of a team. Our Year 6 Team Captains, Isobel and Emmelyn, support, advise and encourage our teams every step of the way.

In the 2022/23 season, our Swim Squad were undefeated, a testament to the courage and dedication of our budding athletes. Their success comes not only from their physical capabilities but also their camaraderie and support of one another. The pupils’ dedication is not solely confined to the School pool; it extends to the highly popular swimming galas both at home and away, allowing swimmers to hone their ability in a friendly and competitive environment.

Those who don’t make the team after initial trials, are invited to join the Development Squad where they refine techniques and build stamina. This ensures that there is space for all aspiring swimmers to advance and compete.

Romney Walton, Prep School Swimming Co-ordinator, proudly stated: “Our Swim Squad is more than a team – it’s a family. Together, we celebrate victories, overcome challenges, and create lasting confidence that will serve pupils both in and out of the water. It’s not just about swimming; it’s about growing together, learning together, and embracing opportunities as one enthusiastic team, with a true ‘Pocklingtonian’ attitude.”
