Mathematicians from Pocklington School have reached the national final of a competition run by the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) to find the country’s most talented young mathematicians.
The team of Tom Bean (L6), Louisa Cullen (U6), Peter Massey (L6) and Peter Wu (U6) competed against 10 other teams in the Regional Final of the Senior Team Maths Challenge.
The competition, held at Beverley Grammar School, tested students’ mathematical dexterity, teamwork and communication skills. The Pocklington School team came first and will now go to the National Final at the Royal Horticultural Halls, London, in February.
Peter and Louisa also recently represented the School in an invitation-only British Mathematical Olympiad, staged by the UKMT to test the 1,000 country’s highest performers in its Senior Challenge held in November.
The UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics. The UKMT organises national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for 11-18 year old UK school pupils, and hosts the UK’s biggest national mathematics competitions.
It runs the Senior Maths Team Challenge in conjunction with The Further Maths Support Programme (FMSP), which is supported by the Department for Education and managed by Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI), an independent educational charity.
