Second Year pupil Lucas Walton has been named U13 Humberside Cross Country Champion 2018 after winning a tough 3k race in the annual Humberside Cross Country Championships.
Lucas, who represented Goole Youth Athletics Club in the race at Costello Park and stadium, Hull, will now represent Humberside at the upcoming Inter County Cross Country Championships in Loughborough in March.
He said: “I was really pleased to win because I’d been ill and hadn’t trained fully for a long time. It was a really close finish but I was determined to beat the lad I was running against at the finish line because I’ve competed against him a few times before.
“I wanted to win it so much I just found the extra energy to push forward at the end. There was only about a second in it but it felt great to win.”
David Byas said: “Lucas is a talented all-rounder who represents the school at athletics and has also been a successful addition to our clay pigeon shooting team. His cross country success is much-deserved recognition for all the hard work he puts in. and I’ve no doubt 2018 will continue to be a very successful year.”
In November, Lucas made his debut in the Pocklington School boys’ clay pigeon shooting team, helping it to win the Intermediate category in the Yorkshire Schools Open Challenge, held near Snaith, East Yorkshire.
And last May, he performed superbly when representing his club in the Humberside County Athletics Championships, winning gold in the high jump and two silver medals and personal bests in the 200m and 800m races.
