Last week, First Year pupils had a break from their regular timetable to explore and develop their enterprise skills. The theme for the day was music festivals, and the activities were designed to help them learn about entrepreneurship, teamwork, and problem-solving.
The pupils were divided into small groups, and each team was tasked with four challenges. First, they had to make a hat using the materials provided and sell it to their peers. Then, they had to come up with a viable solution for dealing with abandoned tents at festivals, which is a major environmental issue. Next, they had to upcycle festival rubbish into saleable products. Finally, they had to recruit an events manager for their business and pitch their products/services to a panel of judges.
The pupils were enthusiastic and creative throughout the day, and they came up with some interesting ideas and products for the upcycling challenge. They experimented with different ways of turning festival rubbish into useful and attractive products such as flip flops.
The final challenge was the Dragon's Den-style pitch, where the pupils had to present their products and services to a panel of judges. At the end of the day, four leading teams were chosen to present their ideas to the whole year group in front of Toby Seth, Headmaster at Pocklington School. The winning team was Hutton, who were crowned Enterprise Day Champions 2023! The team members were Juliette Callau, Adelaide Crewes, Sophie De Klein, Ben Falkingham, Fergus Walker and Beth Symes who were thrilled to win.
Pupil comments about the day stated how the event had challenged them to 'think outside the box' and use 'many different skills'. Ben Falkingham commented: "Enterprise day was a fun experience which taught us how to present our ideas in an organised way. I enjoyed creating the products, working as a team and listening to people's ideas. It was a brilliant day!"
The Enterprise Day is part of the PSHE curriculum run by the Business, Economics and Enterprise department at Pocklington School. Robin Crewes, teacher of Economics and Business said: “At Pocklington, we believe that young people need to be prepared for a world that is changing rapidly and they need to develop the skills and attitudes to cope with an unpredictable future. Enterprise encourages young people to develop skills for life, learning, and employment, and it prepares them for the world of work, including self-employment.
He continued: “We are proud of our First Year pupils, and we hope that they will continue to be enterprising, innovative, and passionate in all their endeavours. Congratulations to all!"
