Former Pocklington School teacher and Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Commander Mike Evans has been presented with a Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant Award for his exceptional service to the CCF.

Mr Evans was the School’s longest-serving CCF Contingent Commander when he retired last summer from the CCF (as Wing Commander Evans) and as Head of Chemistry after 32 years.  

He was presented with the Lord-Lieutenant’s Award by HM Lord-Lieutenant of East Yorkshire, The Hon Susan Cunliffe-Lister, at an event hosted by 150 Regiment, The Royal Logistic Corps at Middleton Barracks in Hull.

The Award honours members of the Reserve and Cadet Forces who go above and beyond their remit to provide outstanding service over a period of time and ranks second only to HM The Queen’s Birthday and New Year’s Honours.

Colonel David Fuller OBE, Vice Chairman (Youth and Cadets) for the Reserve Forces and Cadets’ Association, nominated Wing Commander Evans for his award.

He said: “It is almost impossible to quantify Mike’s dedication, enthusiasm and commitment to the CCF. Simply put, he has been the heart of the contingent and has built it into the strong, successful team that it is today.

“He has gone above and beyond what could possibly be expected of a Contingent Commander; forging great friendships with school colleagues, Old Pocklingtonians and many serving and retired members of the British Forces.

“Each and every one of his officers, both past and present, is hugely grateful for the support and sound counsel he has given them over the past few decades, all with a good dose of humour.”

Mr Evans said: “It was a huge surprise and a great honour to be informed of my name being proposed for the award. It is very humbling and most appreciated that my 38 years of involvement with the Cadet Forces and commitment to them had been acknowledged and rewarded in this way.”

During his time at the School, he ran numerous CCF summer camps, as well as Adventurous Training Expeditions over the Easter Holidays. He and his officers also led the Pocklington cadets to success in many skills and leadership competitions. We send him our congratulations on this well-deserved honour.”
