Sixth Form students and staff went head to head in a hard-fought final of this year’s Masterchef-style competition, which tested their collaborative and culinary skills against the clock.
The winners and runners-up from previous rounds competed against a staff team and one from Tesco, which has provided all the short-dated food for the competition.
Contestants have one and a quarter hours to produce a dish from previously unseen ingredients, picked off the Tesco shelves on its sell-by date. Finalists, who worked mostly in pairs, arrived at the kitchen after school to find sea bass, lemon sole, cabbage and pears among the items to inspire them.
The teams and the dishes they created were:
Lower Sixth:
Josh Toulmin and Magnus Swann – Salmon and pea lemon risotto and chips
David Clifton – Cheesy Sea Bass
Upper Sixth:
Guy Prew and Rob Boddy – Pork Steak, cabbage and bacon and chips
Tiger Brash and Pete Massey – Caramelised Pear and orange sorbet
Staff:
Martin Kettlewell (Director of Music) and Gareth Shephard (Head of Economics and Business Studies) – a North African Southern Fusion dish
Tesco Supermarket:
Rob Carley (Store Manager- Market Weighton) and Karen Berry (Community Companion) - Lemon Sole, stuffed peppers and chips
The food was judged by two keen chefs from among the School staff: Phil Donaldson (Head of Academic Administration) and Toby Seth (Headmaster). They scored the meals out of ten in four categories: use of ingredients; technical skill; appearance and taste.
Pete and Tiger were declared the winners as their dish, the only pudding prepared by the contestants, scored 34 points out of a maximum of 40. All the contestants showed real innovation and skill, setting an impressively high standard for future competitors to match.
Tesco’s Community Food Connection donates surplus fresh food daily from all Tesco stores to local charities and not-for-profit organisations. The supermarket says that since its first collection in 2012, it has collected over 63 million meals to support a wide range of people in the UK who find themselves in need.
