2nd Year pupils enjoyed an exciting programme of cross-curricular activities on Wednesday 7 November thanks to a dedicated team of enthusiastic staff across the subject disciplines. Working in teams, pupils had to demonstrate the Foundation's core principles of courage, truth and trust throughout the day.

In Junior Science, groups were challenged by Dr Clow and Dr Myers to build a boat which would successfully travel with some travelling wind from a hairdryer. The materials, including plastic bags, straws and card, stretched pupils' problem-solving abilities. The aim was to reach the fastest speed possible and the results were impressive!

In English and MFL, Mrs Tomlinson and members of the Languages Department (Herr Galloway, Mrs Scott-Somers, Mrs Peel and Miss Clarke) set a series of clues for teams to solve in groups. The clues were visual (a dinner table abandoned, a man murdered) and linguistic (stories linked to each dinner guest written in French, German and Spanish). It was a real challenge to work out the identity of the murderer...

In PE and Latin, Mr Perham and Mr Andrews devised a series of Classical Games: the ancient pentathlon! Pupils learnt about the origins of the games and then competed in their teams, taking part in the standing long jump, arm wrestling and other physical challenges. There were some unexpected results in the wrestling!

In Maths, Mrs Towner and her team of Sixth Form helpers put together a testing set of problems for pupils to solve, based on a military attack. In groups, they had to crack codes using their numerical skills and lateral thinking. It was impressive to see how well pupils worked with each other and how they persevered despite new material.

This was an excellent experience for staff and pupils. Teachers commented on how well 2nd Years responded to the tasks and we hope that this spirit of enquiry will continue in their future studies.
